Polecat-Ferret
Rabbits have been present on Shetland since at least the 17th century.
The story goes that, in the 1980s, the owner of a golf course who had a problem with Rabbits released Polecat-Ferrets to reduce their numbers.
Unsurprisingly, they reduced the numbers not only of Rabbits but also of ground-nesting birds.
If what we see on the roads is any guide, they are on the increase on Mainland. We can only hope that they don’t reach other islands.
